The unpromising start

Perell's origin story is central to his teaching, because it's an argument against credentials. He was, by his own account, a terrible student who graduated high school with a 2.8 GPA, and he went on to a small college in North Carolina rather than a name-brand university. Early feedback on his professional writing was blunt — after a layoff from a job in sports media, the recurring theme was that he simply wasn't a good writer.

The Write of Passage years

Perell launched Write of Passage in 2019 as a live, five-week cohort course. It grew into the flagship of the cohort-course era: over 2,000 students from 72 countries, employees of Google, Intel, and Twitter among them, premium pricing that reportedly ran into the thousands of dollars per seat, and a Net Promoter Score of 75. Along the way Perell earned the nickname he leaned into on social media: "The Writing Guy."

In August 2024 he announced the company would shut down at the end of the year. Since closing Write of Passage, Perell has gone all-in on the thing he said he was missing: the work itself. His interview podcast, How I Write, launched in 2023 and passed its 100th episode in 2025, has become arguably the leading show about the craft of writing, with guests ranging from novelists like David Baldacci to screenwriters, comedians, and CEOs. He continues to publish essays at perell.com, runs the Writing Examples project on great sentences and how they work, and has publicly flirted with writing a book. He's based in New York City.
